My wife & I live in San Clemente & are longtime subscribers & donors to the Camino Real Playhouse. Another couple from Laguna Hills joins us as subscribers to the same series we attend. When we attend a play in our subscription series the 4 of us always have dinner before the show at one of the several Camino Real Playhouse's partner restaurants in San Juan Capistrano. My wife & I always attend the Camino Real Playhouse's Shakespeare In The Park presented at Heritage Park every summer. In addition we've attended several Second Stage Comedy Night presentations the Playhouse presents on the second Saturday of every month & always have dinner before the show at one of the Playhouse's partner restaurants in San Juan Capistrano. We're always amazec. by the exceptionally high quality of the performances we attend at the Playhouse. Finally, we're very impressed by the work the Playhouse does with kids through their Acting Academy For Kids, Without a doubt the Camino Real Playhouse is truly a performing arts jewel & contributes mightily to the overall'excellence of the city of San Juan Capistrano. I j Hello Tom I Please see what I've written below and ! hope that it can do some good and help in keeping you guys open foryearsto come! Miss you! i ~Michae! LaMasa To Whom it May Concern, From a very early age, 1 knew that 1 wanted to be on the stage. 1 didn't know exactly how to make it happen, but 1 knew that it was what 1 wanted to do. Growing up in a house with two non-performers as parents, there were not a lot of options as far as how and where my dreams could become a reality. Attempts were made through school functions and amateur children's theatre here and there, but it was the moment that I stepped into the Camino Real Playhouse that I knew that acting could be more than just what I did after schooi - Acting could be my life. The very first professional theatre I ever did was at the Camino Real Playhouse over 20 years ago. Since then, I've gone on to study theatre, move to New York City for conservatory training, and enjoyed a 12 year career as a performer in regional theatres and national tours across the country. This fall, I will be assuming the role of Assistant Director of the First National Tour of Woody Allen and Susan Stroman's Broadway smash. Bullets Over Broadway. 1 Turning back the clock to my early years of trying to become an actor, I remember walking into that tiny building and walking down the hallways of cast photos at the Playhouse. 1 remember seeing real dressing rooms for the first time, i remember walking through the scene shop and seeing where ali of their set pieces were built. More importantly, I remember meeting BJ and Tom Scott for the first time. These were two people who's lives were dedicated to the theatre. I had never met or seen anyone like them in my entire iife. Their vast collection of knowledge and desire to share it with the world through art was inspiring to me and I absolutely ate it up. Show after show, children's program after ch Idren's program, I would spend just about every weekend at the Camino Real Playhouse learning and absorbing all I cou d. From BJ and Tom, I learned the rules of the theatre - the craft and the religion of stage. I learned the respect and discipline required of me to be worthy to step out onto that sacred space. I learned about the great playwrights and actors who care before me. I learned about Shakespeare and the Greeks. I learned about how to take direction and how to be a |-eal professional. More importantly, 1 learned who and what 1 could become as both an actor and a person. When I heard that the Camino Reai Playhouse might possibly be no more, I had a moment of confusion. It didn't make sense to me - A world without them didn't seem to make sense to me. My reasons for wanting and needing the Playhouse to still be around aren't for my own nostalgia or to preserve my roots. It is not so that 1 could still see my face on the wall of cast photos or see my handprints in the cement outside. No, my desire to still see the Camino Real Playhouse alive and well isn't just for me, but rather all of the future generations of kids like me who yearn and long for direction and guidance towards a life on the stage. What the Playhouse provides is more than just a place for people to come and sit and watch a play... it's a place where countless people from all walks of life can come and allow themselves to be inspired. For me, it was a lighthouse that guided me away from the rocks and out to the open seas that were my career as an actor. To many other kids and aspiring actors, it has been and should continue to be the same thing. Please, don't send us Into the rocks. Find it in your heart to allow the Camino Real Playhouse to continue to guide generations of young actors towards greatness. Please allow the Playhouse to continue to be a safe place for artists and families. Please allow the Camino Real Playhouse to live on in more than just our hearts. Both entities are highly regarded, long- standing members of our community and offer immense benefit both cuituraiiy and economically. The Ecology Center is providing a great service to the community by offering educational opportunities and preserving some historic elements of our City's past. Their many events and programs bring a unique demographic into San Juan Capistrano and cultivate an understanding of increasingly important envirgnmentai issues. The Camino Reai Playhouse is another asset that has a great impact on the community. The Playhouse is one of just a few entities that brings people into our downtown at night on a consistent basis. This results In additional shopping and dining visits and introducing new people to the historic downtown. This benefits the local businesses directly and positively Impacts the City and its residents through tax revenue. Further, as with the Ecology Center, the cultural impact can't be understated, People of ail ages gain from the high-quality programs offered at Camino Reai Playhouse. Their productions are something that this City shouljd take great pride in and work to preserve. Both the Playhouse and Ecology Center have been members of the Chamber of Commerce, supporters of other local, non-profit organizations and outstanding 'ambassadors' for the City of San Juan Capistrano. The loss of either organization would be a great loss for our local economy and the wonderful cultural identity of San Juan Capistrano. On bahaif of the Chamber of Commerce and the 300+ local businesses we represent, i respectfully ask that you support the renewal of both license agreements. Thank you for your consideration.
