Subject: PLEASE RENEW CAMINO REAL PLAYHOUSE LICENSE AGREEMENT! El I would like to express my support for the Camino Real Playhouse. As a 15 year resident of this fine town, I recognize that part of its historic charm is the playhouse. After all, the City's theme, and that of its leaders, is to preserve the downtown area while still fostering ways in which folks from neighboring areas can come visit and generate revenue in a positive way. The playhouse is assuredly one reason to visit, while adding charm and individuality to our downtown area, and generates revenue for adjacent restaurants. However, for those of you who do not regularly visit, you may overlook a vital community service that the playhouse offers as well. Every day, children and adults convene for auditions, to practice and rehearse, and to sing and dance. Any day of the week something is going on, and the positive energy of those auditioning, reflected by the faces of nervous parents and others waiting in the hallways, is truly inspiring. My point: lest the City leaders feel that the playhouse is a one -trick pony offering a few performances now and then to certain lucky folks who can buy a ticket, it is in fact a hub of cultural and community activity. am neither a worker, volunteer nor employee of the Camino Real Playhouse, However, I was lucky enough this year to have "accidentally" taken a class there, and was surprised (if not shocked) to learn all of the above. Never did I realize the energy and activity that exists there, and to the extent you also don't, please do not overlook it when considering the license agreement in the playhouse's favor. I have been performing in and assisting with technical duties for shows at Camino Real Playhouse over the last 4 years. I am grateful for the opportunities provided by the playhouse and by Tom and Beverly. They gave me my first break, so although I have performed at other playhouses in Orange County, I consider Camino Real Playhouse my home theater. I would be heartbroken if they were unable to continue providing quality theatrical productions at affordable prices. The city council needs to be aware that community theater isn't just about theater. It is also about community - especially at Camino Real Playhouse. The first time I walked through the door there, I was greeted with heartfelt smiles and genuine kindness. I have made several friends over the past few years of my involvement with this group and I hope to be afforded the opportunity to continue to make more. But, Camino Real Playhouse isn't just about feelings and friendship. I strongly believe that without the playhouse, San Juan Capistrano would not do as well financially. I know of several people from other areas - both in California and out - who would not have brought their tourist dollars to your fair city if not for Camino Real Playhouse. 1, myself, have had people come down from Las Vegas to see shows there. Whenever there is a show, there are usually pre -show dinners and post -show cocktails that also contribute to the local economy. That is in addition to what is spent by the performers during the weeks of rehearsals leading up to each show. I urge the city council to renew the license under the same terms and conditions currently in effect so Camino Real Playhouse can continue to operate and contribute to the local community and economy. PLEASE RENEW CAMIN© REAL PLAYHOUSE LICENSE AGREEMENT! Mello San Juan Capistrano City Council, Both of my children grew up taking the children's theatre classes at El Camino Real Playhouse and are now thriving and successful in high school. My son, Cole started his high school career at OCHSA and is graduating this year from San Juan Hills High School where he achieved the highest ranking possible for a thespian, which is the "International Thespian Award". In addition Cole has had the opportunity to perform in every musical and straight play (frequently cast as the lead) that was produced at SJHHS. Cole is also graduating as Valedictorian. as well as 6 other honor distinctions this year. Both of my children have been performing in the theatre since they were 5, and we are patrons of the arts at all of the local theaters. I know that had the El Camino Real Theatre not provided the children's theatre program when they were in grade and middle school, their experience in the theatre would have been very different. Now, any son is going to go to USC at the Marshall School of Business and is planning on minoring in theatre. He hopes to work in the industry in some form or another! Beverly - I tried to send the following email but it was rejected for bad address(es). Can you please forward on my behalf or provide me with the correct email addresses so I can submit it myself? Thanks. Michael "I ask the Council to ensure that Camino Real Playhouse remains a vibrant part of historic downtown San Juan Capistrano and renew the license agreement under the same terms and conditions that have benefited all of us in San Juan Capistrano for the past quarter of a century." I have been performing in and assisting with technical duties for shows at Camino Real Playhouse over the last 4 years. 38 But, Camino Real Playhouse isn't just about feelings and friendship. I strongly believe that without the playhouse, San Juan Capistrano would not do as well financially. I know of several people from other areas - both in California and out - who would not have brought their tourist dollars to your fair city if not for Camino Real Playhouse. I, myself, have had people come down from Las Vegas to see shows there. Whenever there is a show, there are usually pre -show dinners and post -show cocktails that also contribute to the local economy. That is in addition to what is spent by the performers during the weeks of rehearsals leading up to each show, I urge the city council to renew the license under the same terms and conditions currently in effect so Camino Real Playhouse can continue to operate and contribute to the local community and economy. Others who own businesses in the downtown SJC area can better attest to the good business sense behind keeping the Playhouse part of that community. I want to be sure the Council knows how much the Playhouse means to the larger community of south Orange County. Through its award winning and world premiere presentations, through its Children's Theatre program (which annually involves hundreds of boys and girls in productions, introducing them to the world of the performing arts in a positive and absorbing manner), and though the annual Capistrano Shakespeare Festival, the Camino Real Playhouse is a frankly stupendous resource and addition to the life of south Orange County. Renewal of the Playhouse's lease not only makes good business sense, it is a simple imperative for anyone the least concerned with the larger quality of life in this community. Even better, renewal costs the City nothing. The Playhouse has never taken one penny from City coffers. It sustains itself. Nothing speaks more to the desire of the community (in San Juan itself, and beyond) to see the Playhouse continue and prosper in its second 25 years, even as it has in its first quarter century. I hope the Council will take the clear and obvious choice, and renew the Playhouse's lease, to keep this unique and invaluable resource for future generations of our community. Rich Hutchinson San.
