NEW BUSINESS
Consideration of Historic Depiction Proaram (HDP) for Paseo de Verduao
(Mexico Lindo-Vaauero West -Nick's Caf6). Architectural Control (AC) 06-12: a
request for approval of a photo and text brass plaque on the Basque history
associated with the building located at 26755 Verdugo Street (APN 121-141-11)
(Applicant: Eric Altman, 26755 Verdugo LLC), Teri Delcamp made the staff
presentation on behalf of project manager David Contreras and recommendation
that the Commission conditionally approve the proposed HDP.
Commissioners Porter and Nunez suggested changing the text to be more user-
friendly. Rather than referring to the building being a gathering place for the
Portola Riders or the Basques, the text could generally say it was a gathering
place. The text could include phrases such as "this home and restaurant were an

important social gathering place for the community" and "many Basques were
sheepherders in this area," etc. Staff will incorporate simpler text in the exhibit
that is attached to the resolution.
Eric Altman was present to respond to questions and agreed to simplifying the
text.
After due consideration, Chair Banda moved, and Commissioner Porter
seconded; adoption of a resolution approving the HDP as modified, subject to
Resolution No. 09-11-24-1. The motion was approved by a vote of 4-0.
INFORMATION ITEM
Consideration of Revision to Concept for Blas Aguilar Adobe Repair, 31806 EI
Camino Real (CIP No. 74031formerly 455): an informational report On the
response to prior preliminary CHC input and a revised storage concept for the
rear -wing restoration of the City -owned Blas Aguilar Adobe. Project Manager Teri
Delcamp noted that due to family circumstances, David Belardes could not
attend this meeting and staff recommends a continuance. The CHC unanimously
continued the item to the January 26, 2010, meeting.
COMMISSION/STAFF COMMENTS
Commissioner Porter reported that the annual Ghost Tours had players from the
Camino Real Playhouse who were docents this year which enhanced the tours with
first -person portrayals of historic characters including Polonia Montanez, Chola Martina
and the "white lady." She announced that the Montanez Adobe and the O'Neill Museum
will both be open for the City's Holiday Tree Lighting event on December 5.
Staff noted that a contract has been awarded to Mark Sauer Construction, Inc., for the
Montanez Adobe CIP project and construction will commence on December 13. A
construction fence will be erected around the Adobe after the Tree Lighting event, but
only a portion of it will have mesh so that people can see through the fence to the
Adobe from Los Rios Street and the park area in front of the Adobe. The City's property
manager has leased the Williams/Swanner House for one year, then month-to-month, to
a family who will be moving in during December. Staff will be bringing the revised Shea
Center Historic Depiction Program to the Commission in the near future. There will be
no CHC meeting in December.
ADJOURNMENT
Chair Banda adjourned the meeting at 5:40 pm to the meeting of January 26, 2010.
