Subject: SJC Chamber contract renewal
Please forward to Mayor Patterson and Council members. Thank you. Nancy French.
July 19,2016
Honorable Pam Patterson, Esq., Mayor
32400 Paseo Adelanto
San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675
I am emphatically requesting that the San Juan Capistrano City Council refrain
from renewing any contract or providing any financial support to the San Juan
Chamber of Commerce regarding Tourism & Economic Development.
One generally assumes a city's Chamber of Commerce acts in the best interest
of those it represents. However, composed of a considerable number of non-
residents, the San Juan Chamber has betrayed this community in the past, seem-
ingly in favor of personal political, social, and financial advantage. The Chamber's
blatant disregard for actual San Juan citizens in its diabolical support for the proposed
SDG&E expansion of the SIC substation is one demonstration of its difficulty in
maintaining ethical goals, responsible leadership, and sound financial stewardship,
adding to the City's need to expend hundreds of thousands of dollars in the fight against
a facility best suited elsewhere, apparently even in the eyes of the CPUC. This, at a time
when the city can ill afford being forced into evermore costly battles. In this one example,
just whose best interests has the Chamber been representing? Certainly not ours, and
this experience demonstrates easy chamber access to city coffers doesn't guarantee
loyalty or necessarily bode well for the community in general. Beware the devil within.
I can only advocate you overwhelmingly deny the request for contract renewal.
Respectful! y,
Nancy French
