It is a policy of the City Council that prior to the issuance of any permit for the
alteration, modification or demolition of a building or auxiliary structure, the application shall
be reviewed by the Cultural Heritage Commission and the structure shall be evaluated for
possible significance. If significance is determined, the applicant may be required to
comply with one or more of the following Council policies which pertain to the alteration,
modification or demolition of significant structures.
1. Prior to the issuance of any permit for the demolition of a building listed on the
Inventory of Historical and Cultural Landmarks or the Buildings of Distinction,
the applicant may be required to advertise for a period of time up to three
months that the structure is available for relocation. If at the end of the
advertisement period there is no person willing to relocate the building, the
applicant will be allowed to demolish the structure in accordance with other
applicable policies.
2. Prior to the issuance of any permit for the alteration, modification or demolition
of a significant structure, the owner may be required to provide a photographic
record of such structure. Photographs shall include but not be limited to: (1)
each elevation; (2) close-ups of any unusual or unique architectural features;
and (3) views of the structure from a distance. In addition, measured
drawings or plans may be required to be submitted.
3. Prior to the issuance of any permit for the demolition of a significant structure,
the applicant may be required to allow the removal of any significant or
unusual windows, doors or hardware for a period of time up to two weeks at
the expense of the person/organization removing the article. This option shall
be made available only to local historic-interest groups or organizations.
