Subject: Re: Proposed Bike Trail to be discussed at City Council Meeting, Jan 18, 5:00 pm
Jan 13, 2016
Dear Ms. Morris:
Would you please forward this request to the city council members on
behalf of many of us who board at Tar Farms.
I am an equestrian who boards at Tar Farms and have recently become aware of the proposed asphalt bike trail
the City Council is scheduled to vote on. I and many others are very disturbed that an asphalt bike trail is even
considered to be shared with horses. It sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen!
Some horses will spook at anything moving toward them or behind them (and especially at high speeds). Some
horses have been known to spin quickly, bolt or even buck if scared enough, causing serious injury to the
rider. It is unpredictable what a live animal will do. A rider has to be experienced to be able to stay mounted
on a horse or know what to do in the event that a horse over reacts. Horses are "flight" animals and depending
on their experiences, their age, their temperament, the discipline they work under and their riders ability, they
can be very unpredictable out on trail.
The City should consider this bike and horse sharing proposal a huge risk to both horses and their riders!
Many equestrians travel on the"berm" between Mission
Stable and Tar Farms. This bike trail effort will restrict the many of us who have enjoyed a safe place to ride
for so many years.
Please reconsider this proposal. Do not take what little trails we can safely ride away from us!!
Thank you for your consideration.
