Resolution Number 08-02-19-01RESOLUTION NO. 08-02-19-01 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CALIFORNIA, OPPOSING THE CITY OF BERKELEY'S OPPOSITION TO MILITARY RECRUITMENT EFFORTS WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of San Juan Capistrano hereby condemns the Jan. 29, 2008 actions of the Berkeley City Council, which moved to ban the Marine Corps Recruiting Station at 64 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley, California and brand the Marines as "uninvited and unwelcome intruders." WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of San Juan Capistrano would welcome a Marine Corps recruiting office in its community and wholeheartedly supports the United States Marine Corps. WHEREAS, in fact, the City in 2006 adopted the 1st Battalion, 11 t Marines Regiment (1/11) based at Camp Pendleton, and has supported the 1/11 and its families through a number of community outreach, civic programs and events. ' WHEREAS, the City Council supports all of our Armed Forces whether it be the Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy or Coast Guard. WHEREAS, our Armed Forces continue to serve our nation with distinction and with honor. They have stood watch over the men and women of American diplomacy with vigilance and with courage. In many times of testing, when lives were on the line, our Armed Forces, and the Marines in particular, have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of Freedom. WHEREAS, the City of San Juan Capistrano supports the Marine Corps' right to tell their story and would not be critical of any groups' right to speak — even if those groups' opinions differed from our own. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of San Juan Capistrano does hereby condemn the Jan. 29, 2008 actions of the Berkeley City Council, which moved to ban a Marine Corps Recruiting Station located in the City of Berkeley, and further expresses its wholehearted support for the U.S. Marine Corps and all of our Armed Forces. Page 1 of 2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of San Juan -- Capistrano encourages its residents to support and embrace our U.S. Marine Corps and all of our armed forces, which serve to protect us in times of peace and war. Our Marines have a long history of defending our nation. Marines believe in our country, and the City Council of the City of San Juan Capistrano believes in them.
