RESOLUTION NO. 63-4-22_1
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO REQUESTING THE DESIGNATION OF
ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, AS A STANDARD METROPOLITAN
AREA
The following Resolution was offered for adoption by Councilman Buchheim:
WHEREAS, the federal government designates important statistical areas across
America as Standard Metropolitan Areas; and
WHEREAS, Orange County, California, since 1949 has been lumped into the
Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, now called the "Los Angeles -Long Beach Standard
Metropolitan Area", with no mention of Orange County in its title; and
WHEREAS, if Orange County is separated from Los Angeles County and designated
a separate metropolitan area, the Orange County, California, Standard Metropolitan
Area would probably be the 26th largest of the 204 big metropolitan areas of the
nation; and
WHEREAS, fast-growing Orange County, as long as it is lumped into the so-
called "Los Angeles -Long Beach" area, is lost to the notice of researchers, indust-
rialists, marketers, investors and federal and state agencies who study the federal
government's list of metropolitan areas for economic ratings; and
WHEREAS, statistics in Orange County, the fastest growing major County in the
nation, are needed in comparison to other metropolitan areas in order to attract
industry and investment and to aid in future planning and development by local,
state, and federal agencies; and
WHEREAS, population estimates published by Orange County Newsmagazine of Life,
Business and Industry show that Los Angeles County, on its own, is now rapidly
moving ahead of the 6 -County Chicago Standard Metropolitan Area; and that
WHEREAS, Orange County can not be separated from Los Angeles County for
statistical purposes without affecting the standing of the Los Angeles Area as
"Second Largest Market in the United States", ahead of the Chicago Area and second
only to the New York Area;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the members of the City Council of
the City of San Juan Capistrano, duly elected governing body of the said City,
