ANNIVERSARY OF OLD MISSION
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CALIFORNIA, COMMEMORATING
OLD MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO ON THE 200TH
ANNIVERSARY OF ITS FOUNDING
WHEREAS, the Old Mission San Juan Capistrano was
founded November 1, 1776 by Father Junipero Serra; and,
WHEREAS, the Old Mission was established as a
religious, social, and educational center for the native
Indians; and,
WHEREAS, crops and livestock tended by the local
Mission inhabitants formed the economic base for the sur-
rounding area; and,
WHEREAS, the Old Mission community grew into a
permanent settlement which became the incorporated City of
San Juan Capistrano in April 1961; and,
WHEREAS, the Old Mission continues to function today
as a parish church, school, and national historical landmark,
and is a source of pride for all members of the community and
a fond remembrance for all visitors; and,
WHEREAS, 200 years later, the Old Mission still
serves the community as a reminder of the spiritual purpose
for which the community was founded, and as a reminder of
the cultural heritage which is so deeply imbedded in the roots
of the community,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the members of
the City Council of the City of San Juan Capistrano do hereby
join witn the people in the joyous commemoration of the 200th
anniversary of the Old Mission's founding by proclaiming
November 1, 1976, as a day of civic celebration.
PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED this 20th day of
October , 1976, by the following vote, to wit:
AYES: Councilmen Friess, Heckscher, McDowell,
Sweeney, and Mayor Nash
