RESOLUTION NO. 88-9-6-1
CONGRATULATING EL ADOBE RESTAURANT
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN
JUAN CAPISTRANO, CALIFORNIA, CONGRATULATING EL
ADOBE DE CAPISTRANO RESTAURANT ON THEIR FORTIETH
ANNIVERSARY
WHEREAS, El Adobe de Capistrano Restaurant was established 40 years ago
and has been an integral part of San Juan Capistrano's history; and,
WHEREAS, the EI Adobe structure initially consisted of two historic adobes;
the northern -most being the Miguel Yorba Adobe which was the home of Don Jose
Antonio Yorba II and his descendants, one of the first families to settle in San Juan
Capistrano; and,
WHEREAS, the southern portion of El Adobe was long -known as the "Juzgado"
and served as a justice court, a jail, a store, and even a stage-sb:)p on the stage line from
San Diego to Los Angeles at various times in its history; and,
WHEREAS, Harry and Georgia Van der Leck acquired the adobes and combined
and remodeled the Yorba and Juzgado sections into one large home; and,
WHEREAS, Clarence R. Brown, acquired the property in 1946 and subsequently
transformed it into the El Adobe de Capistrano Restaurant; and,
WHEREAS, the tradition of the El Adobe Restaurant has been continued and
enhanced by its prior owners including Alfred and Josephine Cornwall and Ellie Allen;
a nd,
WHEREAS, the acquisition of III Adobe by Richard J. O'Neill in 1984 placed
ownership of El Adobe in the hands of a family with long and historic ties to San Juan
Capistrano; and,
WHEREAS, RIchard J. O'Neill has continued the tradition of El Adobe as a
landmark "eating establishment and watering hole" for presidents, world leaders,
dignitaries and Los Patrones and El Presidente de El Viaje de Portola, as well as hosting
thousands of visitors and many local service clubs and organizations.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of
San Juan Capistrano congratulates Richard J. O'Neill, the owners and employees past and
present, on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of El Adobe de Capistrano, and

further, on behalf of the citizens of San Juan Capistrano, thanks El Adobe for its service
and contribution to our community and wish El Adobe many years of continued success.
