SUPPORTING THE DESIGNATION OF MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO
AS A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN JUAN
CAPISTRANO, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING AND ENDORSING THE
DESIGNATION OF MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO AS A NATIONAL
HISTORIC LANDMARK
WHEREAS, Mission San Juan Capistrano possesses exceptional historic value in
illustrating and interpreting events that resulted in the early exploration, settlement, and annexation
of California to the United States; and,
WHEREAS, Mission San Juan Capistrano embodies the architectural characteristics
and distinguishing features of early California Mission Style of architecture; and,
WHEREAS, founded November 1, 1776, the Mission is the seventh in the California
Mission chain and the centerpiece of San Juan Capistrano's downtown; and,
WHEREAS, the integrity and authenticity of the buildings and site features at Mission
San Juan Capistrano collectively compose an entity of historic value; and,
WHEREAS, the "Jewel of the Missions" occupies a ten -acre site and includes the
beautiful central courtyard and numerous museum rooms and displays that bring the Spanish and
pre -history eras to life; and,
WHEREAS, the Mission grounds are host to Serra Chapel, one of the oldest
buildings in California, the ruins of the Great Stone Church and other historic buildings.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of San
Juan Capistrano does hereby enthusiastically endorse and support Mission San Juan Capistrano's
efforts to achieve designations as a National Historic Landmark.
