The addition of one bedroom will increase the total number of bedrooms to 6. The existing septic tank has a capacity of 1500 gallons, which is adequate per the current code for 5 to 6 bedrooms. Since no percolation test report was prepared for the site within the past 10 years, a percolation test was performed at the existing seepage pit currently being used at the property. Based on the testing, a percolation rate of 1.20 gallons/square-foot/day was obtained. The total percolation area of the existing seepage pit, after using the required 50% reduction in capacity, is 848 square feet. Therefore, the percolation capacity is 848 square feet x 1.20 gallons/square-foot/day or 1017 gallons/day. Based on the typical estimate of 150 gallons/day of wastewater per bedroom, the addition of the one- bedroom addition to the existing system will now result in 900 gallons/day of wastewater (i.e., design for 6 bedrooms). Based on the above information, the existing septic tank has a capacity of 1500 gallons which is adequate for 6 bedrooms. Additionally, septic pit capacity (i.e., 1017 gallons/day) exceeds wastewater needs for 6 bedrooms (900 gallons/day); therefore, no additional percolation capacity is required for adding the one- bedroom residential room addition.
