Dear Mr. Smiggs:
Petra Geosciences, Inc. (Petra) is submitting herewith a summary of our observations and testing of
footing excavations for residences, and compaction of backfill within utility trenches and the reprocessing
of slab subgrade soils within the subject lots. Reports verifying acceptable conditions were posted at the
site during the various phases of construction. The site was graded in general conformance with the
recommendations contained in the referenced reports and is considered suitable for its intended use.
SUMMARY
Foundation Observations
Excavations of footing trenches for the residences were observed and found to be excavated into competent
bearing soils.
Utility Trench Backfill Placement
1. Interior trenches under floor slabs were backfilled with imported sand considered to have a sand
equivalent of 30 or better as determined in accordance with CalTrans Test Method 217. The sand was
wetted to consolidate it.
2. Backfill of exterior trenches consisted of onsite soils placed above select sand bedding. The depth of
sand bedding placed above utility lines varied from approximately 6 to 12 inches. On-site backfill
materials were moisture conditioned as necessary to achieve optimum or over optimum moisture
conditions prior to and/or during placement, and then compacted in 6- to 8 -inch lifts with a pneumatic
tamper to a minimum relative compaction of 90 percent.

3. Exterior trenches consist of sewer, water, and joint utilities (Edison, gas, telephone, TV). The
approximate maximum depths of backfill for the various trenches are listed below:

4. Exterior trenches were probed and/or tested and found to be adequately compacted for the intended
purpose.
Field and Laboratory Testing
1. Field density and moisture content tests were performed by nuclear methods (ASTM D6938). Test
results are summarized in Table 1, and approximate locations of the field density tests are shown on the
enclosed site plans (Figure 1).
2. Field density tests were taken at approximate I -foot vertical intervals to ascertain adequate compaction.
3. Visual and tactile classification of earth materials in the field was the basis for determining if the
maximum density values presented in Table II were applicable for each density test presented in
Table I.
4. The laboratory maximum dry density and optimum moisture content for each major soil type
encountered during grading were determined in accordance with Test Method ASTM D1557-07. Test
results are summarized in Table ll.
CONCLUSIONS
The earthwork performed under the purview of this report has been completed in general compliance with
our recommendations and the Grading Code of the City of San Juan Capistrano, California. The completed
earthwork is considered geotechnically suitable for the planned construction.
REPORT LIMITATIONS
Representatives of Petra were present onsite on an on-call basis during the previously described post -
grading operations for the purpose of providing the owner's representative with professional opinions and
recommendations. These opinions and recommendations were developed based on field observation and
selective testing of the contractor's work. Our scope of services during this project did not include
supervision or direction of the contractor, his personnel or his subcontractors. As documented in this report,
our observations and testing did not reveal any obvious deviations from the recommendations provided in
the geotechnical report by our firm; however, Petra does not in any way guarantee the contractor's work,
nor do our services relieve the contactor (or any subcontractors) of their liability should any defects
subsequently be discovered in their work product.
