Mechelle,
I applaud these efforts to improve the utilization of our parking resources to give greater access to our community.
We have limited physical space for parking in the SJC. Finding innovative ways to optimize those spaces will yield
benefits to
all stakeholders in our city. This will be a journey to finding solutions that work.
But it is a good one to start.

Subject: FW: Summer 2019 Valet Parking Pilot Program
Dear HTA members,
I am forwarding the City's report recommending the Council to adopt a trial new Parking Valet
program.
If you recall, with the leadership help of Rob Quest, the Foundation funded at a cost of $10,000 an
earlier summer pilot parking program for weekend evenings. During our trial period we learned a lot.
I believe the City is trying to address parking issues, which not only include deficiencies, but actually
how parking is allocated. Many years ago the parking structure actually charged a fee, then we have
gone in and out of various additions and removals of our overall parking count with the development
or restriction of available parking lots. The fact is that parking is worth a lot, and the visitor is willing to
pay something for it. Employees are willing to walk a little further if they are safe and know where to
go. Figuring out steps to address parking management when we are most busy (Thursday to
Sunday) and encouraging alternative means is a step in the right direction. There is precedent to
charge for parking in the downtown and the customer is not surprised by it any more. In fact our
guests often remark that they'd be willing to pay if they could park. And they'd visit if they could find
parking (see some of our Trip Advisor reviews).
I hope you can read this report and consider sending in a letter of support, or at least raise your
concerns early on so that the city can respond accordingly.
I am in support of efforts that attempt to address our allocation of parking and willing to do what we
can.
The areas of concern I have to date are minor and include:
Consideration of increasing the day long commuter rate since they take our parking out of play all
day.
Develop UBER/LYFT/Taxi drop off locations we can market
Include customer service host training for our volunteer parking enforcers
Having the City liaison with the Train operators/Metrolink/am track to allow the community to market
taking the train to the downtown. Indirect advertising within the signage in the trains themselves,
social media promotional partnerships, and direct email promotions to their database would be helpful
to encourage ridership to our historic downtown.
Those are my thoughts, and I hope to be constructive in supporting solutions. I also think that the
HTA is very critical to the success or failure of any program and so I encourage you to share your
constructive thoughts with Tom, copied here.
Many thanks for your time,
Mechelle
