I would like to provide some information regarding the homework club that is run by
CREER and that directly benefits the students at San Juan Elementary School. Our school
community also values the collaboration between this community organization and our
school as we work together to build bridges between the diverse cultures in our local
population.
Although our school provided many after school programs and intervention classes
throughout the year, we were not able to provide homework assistance to all of the
children that needed this service. Since the CampCo after school program was cut last
year and is no longer at our site as an after school program, we have many students who
were not able to get help with their homework assignments. The afterschool homework
program provided by CREER filled this gap in services during the past school year.
Two qualified teachers hired by CREER provided tutoring assistance to students on a
regular basis. These professionals communicated with the school to align their services to
the school's curriculum and to the individual student needs. There was a long waiting list
for the homework club all year as families struggled to provide homework help, reading,
and math practice in English and in Spanish.
Our school is proud to host the Dual Immersion program which attracts many families
from a wide variety of backgrounds. These parents select our school because they value
diversity, as well as the benefits of a multicultural education for their children. They
participated in many CREER events throughout the year including the neighborhood
clean-up days, the Dia Del Nifto event, and the ballet folklorico. They also value CREER
as an organization that benefits their children, the school, and the entire city.
As principal at San Juan School, I value the partnership between CREER and our school
community as we collaborate to meet the needs of all the families.
Sincerely,
Silvia Mazzeo Pule
